Where do I start? Oh, the journey we have been on. Caleb and I met back in junior college the year of 2014. The moment I met Caleb, I was instantly drawn to him. His style, his smile, his humor but most importantly the way he served The Lord and others. Oh, and a baseball player. Let’s not forgot that. In 2015 I then married my dream guy and soon after we had our precious daughter Lilly. This is where our story begins.
Fast forward to 2016, the year Caleb was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. Being drafted alone was an excitement but what many people don't know is that Caleb grew up a Cardinals fan. His ultimate dream was to one day play in Busch Stadium. To this day you can find his vision statement hanging on his parent’s refrigerator. Now he plays for them. What!? Only God.
With our world completely changed in a matter of a phone call, I decided to stay home with our daughter while Caleb went and chased his dream. Caleb arrived at his minor league rookie ball team in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was welcomed by the sweetest host family who became more like family. They welcomed us with open arms and made us feel right at home. My daughter, Lilly, and I were able to relocate and spend his rookie season with him. This season was also when we found out we would soon be a family of four. Blessings on top of blessings.
With a new baby coming and an unpredictable life, Caleb and I wanted the off-season to be somewhat normal. So, our search for a house began. Anyone who knows minor league baseball knows the income is not family friendly but we knew if we put our faith in the Lord He would provide. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” Matthew 7:7. That is exactly what He did and is still doing. We found a house, a house the Lord landed right in our lap. He is so good. All the time.
Now for the “rough” season or what we thought was at the time. Now looking back, it was all a part of His plan and lessons were learned. See, He puts you through obstacles to test your faith, but this is when you can expect even greater blessings. Stay focused on Him.
Caleb left for Spring Training and with me being 36 weeks pregnant, Lilly and I stayed behind. Rosters came out and Caleb was informed he was staying back in extended spring training. This is not what we had planned. He had a great rookie season so why was he not on a full season team? You can’t figure it out so don’t even try. We took it with a grain of salt and he kept working and did what he knew best. Play hard and Pray harder.
Within a few weeks of extended spring training, we had our sweet baby boy, Justice. 5 days later Caleb had to report back because ball doesn’t stop for anyone or anything. His next assignment, State College, Pennsylvania. Far, far away from home. With a newborn and a toddler, you can imagine how tired and emotional I was 1,091 miles away from my husband. I was positive there was no chance of seeing my husband that season. Oh, but Jesus had other plans! We were able to spend the last month with my husband and travel the whole east coast. He makes a way every single time.
Everyone in professional sports knows there is no such thing as “off-season”. Professional athletes grind all year long. So, with Caleb focusing on his career, I knew it was time to step out of the stay at home mom world and get a job. For two months I was glued to my phone in search of a job and living in fear. Little did I realize the enemy was not only stealing my joy but stealing precious time from my family. I was desperate, and he used it against me. My dear MIL, Jennifer, and Caleb prayed over me and I immediately handed my situation over to God. No more trying to do it on my own. Two days later a family friend of ours called and 'Bam!" a job. A job I could never have found searching the internet but a job He had for me. Not only does my job now support our family while my husband grinds through his dream but it also allows us to travel with him. Moral of the story my friends- don’t try to figure it out on your own. Jesus knows exactly what you need when you need it. Rest in Him.
Now we are back to the beginning of yet another year. I'm thankful for the opportunity He continues to give my husband playing the greatest game in the world and the people he puts in our lives along the way. This baseball life throws us curveballs but with Him at the center nothing can strike us out.
Praying for each one of you. Seek Him every day in everything you do, and you will find the most faithful father, friend, and love that you have ever known.
